Chapter Ten

“Repent ye Sinners and listen to the Law of Our Lord and Savior!”

Albert’s stomach churned, his dinner sitting ill in his belly. The shrill voice of the man yelling at passersby hurt his ears.

“Trust in the Lord Jesus Christ!”

No. There was no trust. He couldn’t trust in anyone because they all wanted to hurt him. He could tell by the way they looked quickly then looked away, so he couldn’t see the blackness of their hearts shining in their eyes. They would kill him given half a chance. Lock him away and torture him first.

“Reject the demons contaminating our world. Cast them out into the barren lands!”

Albert started to hyperventilate. They wanted to kill him and his friend as well. Hurt him…or worse, take him away. Albert would not let that happen. This one had to die. He was ready to die anyway. He could see the blackness in him, eating him from the inside out. Spewing that poison in the form of words. Borrowed time. That’s what he was doing. Spreading the poison enough so it wouldn’t take him down. Filling the ears of others to do his evil.

“Turn to the Lord Jesus for the answer. He will tell you it is unnatural for a man to lie with non-human devils!”

Albert covered his ears. All the people walking past were ignoring the preacher, giving him looks of disgust or outright hostility, but Albert could tell. He could tell it was all an act. They were taking on the poison. Taking it and they would spread it like disease and they would know, they would know what he did, what he hid, and they would come after him and his friend.

“Understand that He is all powerful! He will do what He wants regardless of whether you believe in Him or not! He will strike those down who befriend His enemies, those not of this world.”

Albert moaned softly where he stood in the darkness of the alley, his hands clamped over his ears but still able to hear no matter how much he tried to shut it out. He had to stop him, stop him from saying more, telling more of his secrets. But people would see. They would see and they would catch him and hurt him and his friend. Too risky. He couldn’t stand it though. Had to shut him up.

“Go,” he whispered. “Go. Stop him.”

His friend stepped out from the alley, towering and lumbering, his footfalls slow and crunching on the sidewalk. Albert watched from the shadows as his friend touched the preacher and his words choked off. The people looked relieved at first, then scared, then they started to run and scream. He called his friend back to him and they ran too—ran away, where they would be safe.
